PRESS: Russians’ loss from cybercrime may reach 165 bln rbl in 2022
MOSCOW, Feb 17 (PRIME) -- A loss from crime with the use of computer technologies will continue to rise in Russia and could reach 165 billion rubles in 2022 because of a still low level of the people’s cyber literacy and their intention to save money amid the uncertainty and permanently rising prices, business daily Kommersant reported on Thursday.
Consulting company RTM Group assessed the total loss from such crime at over 150 billion rubles in 2021. The estimate was made on the base of opened criminal cases related to the use of computer technologies. The company said that almost 518,000 cybercrime incidents were registered in 2021, up 1.4% on the year and almost twice the 2019 number.
Yevgeny Tsaryov, a manager at RTM Group, expects the number of effective attacks to rise by at least 30–40%, among others, via the development of social engineering, the use of new tools, and the total loss could exceed 165 billion rubles in 2022.
The central bank calculated the loss from transactions without the client consent at 9.8 billion rubles in 2020 and 9.1 billion rubles in January–September 2021.
